Creative problem solving in Design
Creativity & Innovation are important aspects of engineering education. However emphasis of most engineering curricula is moving towards increasing role of computers.
While computers and such computer based techniques as CAD,FEA, FMEA,3DCAD/CAM are very powerful tools and significantly improved productivity, time to market and costs of practicing engineers and designers ,they do not help much in developing novel concepts while engineers are solving design & manufacturing problems. It is common knowledge that Korean and Asian Company's, with less computing capability are producing better design products at competitive prices in shorter time.
There is a need for students to have some guidelines for Creative thinking and Innovation for formulating design problems. Many Management
Academies and Corporate Training Institutes can benefit from D-Thinking.
TRIZ based Design Course –Innovation in Engineering Education
Basic Course The basic course covers Triz and other methodologies & tools for creative problem solving in Design & Manufacturing. Students will solve a typical design problem interactively in a classroom environment.
An assignment will include a problem from the students work/area of interest.
Advanced Course-(Senior U/G, P/G) Course Objective –Creative Conceptual Design.
The course will consist of TRIZ lectures.
Design a device for a specific application and participate in prototype manufacture.
Create a conceptual design with Instructors help, do a patent search, make preliminary design drawing , keeping in mind manufacturability. Fabricate a conceptual prototype.
